Big Weekend Coming Up....And A New Life Down The Road.....

I have a lot to do this weekend. I will start my slim down of useless items, like all of the woodworking tools I will never use. Most of the tools are for big power tools that I never use and just don't need. So I plan to sell it all and only keep the nice hand tools that I have. I will keep a few of my small power tools, like me drill, the colt router, skill-saw, sanders, and a few others but all will fit into a nice tote to fit into whatever motor home or rig we get. I also plan to sell all the junk we keep just because we don't want to get rid of it, I have had it and don't need any of this junk. We are going to keep the living room and bed room furniture and put it into storage, plus we will keep a few other things in storage just in case we don't like it on the road, but I can't see me not liking it. We are doing a lot of reading and we had an 23 foot RV for over 6 years and used it off and on, so we know a little about being on the road in a small RV. Me and the wife were talking today and have came up with a pre-plan for our big new life. I get PTO at work(paid time off) and we plan to save over the next 6-12 months and when we are ready to hit the road we will have a trial run with the motor home. I will take a month off with pay and we will give it a go and see how we like it and if we do I will come back home and put in my notice at work. And in the two weeks I am working out my last days at my job we will tie up all the undone ends. I have no idea what is down the road for me and my wife but I do know I am very excited about the new life we are going to give a try.
Please any of you who have done this and have any info e-mail me or comment and give me some feedback.

  1. Go for it!
I lived in a 40 foot 5th wheel for three years while working out of town and loved it. What freedom, my lot rent was $200, electric was $50 and for communications I have a cell phone and a laptop data card.
I can recommend that what ever RV you buy having a slide out in the living area is a must.
I have two friends who are full timing for 6 years now and still have no desire to get back to a home. They winter mostly in Florida and twice in California.
I can fill you in with a lot of details if you like. E-mail me (Mike) yukonsupply@yahoo.com for more info or your questions.

    Again, go for it!

  2. Sounds like a plan Pete. All I can say is that my folks spent 5 years on the road and loved every minute of it. My Dad would like to be roaming still, but Mom wanted a place in the country. I think they felt the need to have a homestead established before SHTF. They still go on trips though...

  3. I think you are really going to enjoy your adventure. It is a big plus that you are in nursing as you can always find a place to park for awhile and makes a few bucks. While you are doing that you will be able to really SEE the area you have chosen to visit. It's one thing to vacation some place, but quite another to actually spend some time there. It is amazing how often those who vacation never really find the "good" places because of the time constraints.
I know you mentioned that you all had spent some time in your last RV. The hardest part of living in an RV is getting used to the "close quarters". It took the hubster and myself a little time to get used to having to turn sideways to pass thru the trailer. But that being said, neither of us has ever regretted making the move into our RV. If there is anything I can help you with just let me know.

  5. Sound like what I wanted to do when retired but the wife won't go for it. So we'll just keep on living in our cabin bug-in location with $1,400.00 a year lot rent.

  6. Pete,
Just a thought. You can put your furniture and such in storage but have you planed on hauling your food storage with you? If not I feel you should. I don't know the volumn of food you may have but concider that.
If things get ugly while you're on the road they wont do you alot of good in a storage unit hundreds of miles away. If 5 gal buckets wont fit under an (aproned) RV maybe think a tent to put them in but I wouldn't leave the vittles behind.
    As always..just my 2 cents..
