25 Survival Uses For Duct Tape

If there ever was a miracle product better than spray-on-hair or the ShamWow, it is duct tape. Over the past 70 years of its existence, this staple product of fix-it-yourselfers has been used by virtually every walk of life, for jobs that I’m sure the duct tape developers never imagined. So how can we use it for survival?
Here are my top 25 survival uses for duct tape, in no order whatsoever.
1. Repairing a cracked water bottle or a pierced hydration bladder. A little strip of DT is the next best thing to a bandage for an ailing water vessel. Just dry the surface before you try to tape your patch in place, most forms of duct tape don’t stick to wet surfaces.

2. Survival arrow fletching.
Tear off a few 5-inch pieces, and a long edge of one piece to the arrow shaft, fold the tape lengthwise, and stick the other long edge of that piece to the arrow. Repeat this process one or two more times; trim the vanes to shape with your knife; and you will have a serviceable arrow fletching.
3. Butterfly bandage strips. Cut two small strips of DT, and add a smaller strip across their centers (sticky side to sticky side) to create a makeshift butterfly suture.
4. Make cordage. Twist one or several lengths of duct tape into a cord or rope.
5. Patch a hole in canoe. I wouldn’t trust my life to this one, but it’s been done more than once.
6. Fashion a belt. When you are starving in the wild, and your pants start falling down, run a piece of DT through your belt loops and stick it to itself in the front. Overlap it about 4 or 5 inches and you’ll still be able to peel the belt apart when nature calls.
7. First aid sling. Fold a length of DT down the middle, so that it is half the original width and no longer exposing a sticky side. Use the strap to make a sling for a busted arm.
8. Leave a note. Write on it with a Sharpie, or use strips to form letters.
9. Handcuff alternative. If someone is acting up during a survival emergency, you can duct tape their hands together around a tree to prevent them from becoming a danger to themselves or others.
10. Mend shoes and clothing. You can skip the sewing class, if you have enough duct tape.
11. Repair your glasses. The tape on your glasses my look a little nerdy, but at least you’ll still be able to see.

12. Attach shelter elements.
Just a few trash bags and some duct tape, and you have a survival shelter roof, or a sleeping bag cover, or a wind break, or…
13. Attach survival gear. Tape a spark rod to the side of your knife sheath, and you’ll always have a back-up fire source.
14. Make a hat. If you believe what you see on TV, the “Mythbusters” guys made a pretty nice looking hat out of duct tape on a recent episode.
15. Afix bandages. Place a sterile dressing over your wound, and strap it in place with DT. Hopefully you’re not too hairy where you got injured.
16. Fix your rain gear. Keep the dry stuff dry, and keep the water out, by mending your ripped rain gear with a few strips.
17. Make a drinking cup. Some creative folding and sticking can result in a cup you can drink from.
18. Make a spear. Strap your knife to a pole and you have a trusty spear to fend off beasts, or make one into your dinner.
19. Blister care. Cover the blistered area with a bit of cotton gauze, and tape over the cotton. Make sure that the duct tape fully covers the cotton and doesn’t touch the blister at all.
20. Mark a Trail. Use it to blaze a trail or signal for rescue, especially if your DT is brightly colored or reflective.

21. Make emergency repairs on your Bug Out Vehicle.
Leaking hoses and windows that won’t stay up don’t stand a chance against the mending powers of duct tape.
22. Keep the feathers in your sleeping bag. If you have a hole in your down sleeping bag, the feathers will pour out faster than excuses from a politician. Patch the hole with DT.
23. Keep your tent closed. A damaged zipper could leave your tent door flapping in the wind. Stick the door shut, and keep the bugs and critters out.
24. Splint a leg. A broken ankle or leg can be stabilized with ample splint material, padding and duct tape. Pad the crotch of a forked branch with some cloth and duct tape to fashion a quick crutch to go with your splint.
25. Splint a broken tent pole or fishing pole. By taping a stick to the broken area of your tent pole or fishing rod, you might just get one last adventure out of it.

More Ammo

Homeland Security buying pricey ammo as department-wide cuts take hold

Published March 29, 2013
| FoxNews.com
The Department of Homeland Security is spending more and more on pricey hollow-point bullets for law-enforcement officers -- even as it plans to enforce furloughs and other cuts on Customs and Border Protection employees due to sequestration.
The Department of Homeland Security plans to buy more than 1.6 billion rounds over the next five years for training and on-duty purposes. They cite the numerous law enforcement agencies contained within the department with employees who carry weapons. But the purchases have led to criticism that the agency is spending money on bullets that can cost twice as much as regular ammo -- and questions over whether those bullets are really needed for training purposes.
"Obviously you want to know how a hollow point is going to cycle through your weapon," Scott McCurley, manager for Maryland-based Horst and McCann firing range and a former soldier for the U.S. Army, told FoxNews.com. "But I don't think there's much of a difference when training. One box of rounds per gun is enough. The cost outweighs the purpose."
It's unclear how many of the total rounds sought would be hollow-point, but a recent solicitation specifically called for 360,000 rounds of hollow-point bullets.
Rep. Leonard Lance, R-N.J., who last week wrote a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano asking about the rationale for the purchases, also questioned the cost.
"With sequestration in effect, and the federal debt approaching a record $17 trillion, members of Congress like Leonard Lance believe our federal government should not be spending taxpayer dollars on the stockpiling of billions of rounds of ammunition," his chief of staff Todd Mitchell said in a statement to FoxNews.com. "That's why it's important for DHS officials to explain the need and foundation for this acquisition."
Others disagree, saying that it's important to use the same equipment during training as in the field.
“I have no idea why they would need 1.6 billion rounds, but the reality is that it is essential to train with the same ammo as you would use in real situations,” Steven Howard, a Michigan-based attorney, and weapons and ammunition expert, told FoxNews.com.
A box of 25 rounds of hollow-point bullets can cost double the price of regular, full metal jacket bullets at up to $40 per box.
A statement issued from the Department of Homeland Security maintains the position the agency has taken in recent weeks.
“DHS routinely establishes strategic sourcing contracts that combine the requirements of all its components for commonly purchased goods and services such as ammunition, computer equipment, and information technology services. These strategic sourcing contracts help leverage the purchasing power of DHS to efficiently procure equipment and supplies,” the statement reads.
The statement said one solicitation under the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center has a ceiling of up to 750 million rounds, which the department said allows "flexibility over the next 5 years for training of over 90 federal agencies."
"A separate 5-year department-wide contract allows the purchase of UP TO 450 million rounds of duty ammunition for our law enforcement officers and agents,” the statement also reads. That contract applies to all DHS agencies except the Coast Guard, which uses Pentagon ammo contracts.
“With more than 100,000 armed law enforcement personnel in DHS, significant quantities of ammunition are used to support law enforcement operations, quarterly qualifications, and training, to include advanced firearms training exercises," the department said.
Howard notes that use of hollow-point ammo by law enforcement officers is more efficient and even safer for the public.
“It (hollow points) cuts down on ricochets which means few bystanders will be hit. Hollow points rarely go through one target,” He said.
Officials at the Department of Homeland Security told FoxNews.com that the amount of ammunition is simply a “ceiling” or estimate and does not mean that DHS will buy or require the full amount of ammo. They also said that the number of rounds purchased annually by the department has remained steady since 2009 and that the amounts ordered are usually much less as they are purchased on an “as-needed basis.”
During the fiscal year 2012, DHS purchased nearly 94 million rounds of ammo for use across the department except for the U.S. Coast Guard.
Ammunition is used on a quarterly basis within DHS in training and firearms re-qualification activities in addition to everyday duty among over 100,000 officers and agents.
The news of the intended ammo purchase comes at the same time as automatic budget reductions are set to take effect across the department, including at Customs and Border Protection. The division expects planned furloughs of employees, reductions to overtime and a hiring freeze to increase wait times at ports of entry, including international arrivals at airports.
Officials from CBP have said reductions to Border Patrol overtime will begin on April 7 and furloughs of all CBP employees are expected to begin in mid-April. The agency said “field locations” are reporting sporadic increases in wait times at airports and land border ports due to reduced primary staffing -- between March 14-20, the agency said nearly 200 flights experienced wait times of over two hours, and certain ports experienced wait times that were just as long.
“CBP is working diligently to analyze the Fiscal Year 2013 Appropriations bill and sequestration impacts, and is developing a plan to implement this budget in a way that minimizes the impact on operations and our workforce,” a spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News.
But Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, blasted the administration for the CBP cuts. He said they "amount to nothing short of a calculated, willful neglect of what should be a president's top priority: protecting the homeland and keeping Americans safe."

Obama Front Group Labels Big Sis Bullet Buys ‘Debunked Conspiracy Theory’
Think Progress fails to address fundamental flaw in DHS’ explanation

March 26, 2013
The George Soros-funded Obama campaign front group Think Progress has responded to concerns about a DHS arms build-up by claiming the whole issue is a ‘debunked conspiracy theory’.
John Podesta. Image: YouTube
In an article entitled, OOPS: Fox News Peddles Conspiracy Theory It Already Debunked, the website claims that the, “DHS justified the purchases in a letter to lawmakers,” by explaining, “that it regularly purchases ammunition in bulk to save money and noted that “the 1.6 billion number was misleading because the language of DHS’s purchase said it would need ‘up to’ a certain amount.”
The article then quotes Fox News’ Charles Krauthammer who claimed that, “the amount of ammunition (purchased by the DHS) is less than in previous years.”
However, while the DHS’ own figures show ammo purchases of just over 100 million rounds purchased in the previous two years, over the last 12 months the agency has committed to purchasing at least 1.6 billion bullets. Even if you spread this figure out over the next five years (and discount additional purchases which are happening on a monthly basis), it still amounts to 320 million rounds a year – a threefold increase on previous years.
By attempting to debunk the matter as a conspiracy theory, Think Progress has followed in the footsteps of other news outlets who dismissed the whole story as a non-issue by citing the glib statement of a single DHS official, who claimed the bullets were being bought in bulk to save money and were for training purposes only.
However, as the Think Progress report fails to address, the notion that the ammo is being purchased in bulk to “save money” is completely erroneous since most of the bullets are hollow point rounds, which are almost twice as expensive as regular firing range bullets and therefore unsuitable for training purposes.
As former Marine Richard Mason told reporters with WHPTV News in Pennsylvania earlier this month, “We never trained with hollow points, we didn’t even see hollow points my entire four and a half years in the Marine Corps.”
Not a single one of the “debunking” pieces has even addressed this fundamental flaw in the DHS’ explanation for why it is buying ammo in bulk. Either the DHS is lying about its claim that the bullets are for training purposes only, or the agency is wasting tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money while simultaneously releasing illegal immigrants claiming it is broke.
In addition, if the number of bullets being purchased by the DHS is normal, as Think Progress claims, then why would the DHS need to justify its bulk purchase of them in the first place? To concede that the bullet buys represent “bulk” purchases is to concede that they are being acquired in unusually large quantities.
Furthermore, the claim that the DHS is nowhere near approaching its “up to” figure of 1.6 billion bullets purchased is contradicted by the fact that large ammo purchases are being delivered to the same locations consecutively. For example, last month the agency bought 240,000 hollow point rounds to be sent to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico, the same destination for an additional purchase of 360,000 bullets which was announced last week.
As we have previously documented, Think Progress claims that it is a “nonpartisan organization,” and yet is bankrolled by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a think tank headed by Bill Clinton’s former chief of staff John D. Podesta , who was also head of Barack Obama’s presidential transition team after the 2008 election.
According to SourceWatch, “CAP’s Progressive Media project emerged as a major communications war room on behalf of Obama’s domestic and foreign policy agenda and CAP became a strong advocate for escalation in Afghanistan. Progressive Media is run through the Center for American Project Action Fund, the more political 501(c)4 arm of CAP. It coordinates closely with the Common Purpose Project, an effort to create message discipline among the pro-Obama organizations, with a direct tie to the White House.”
According to Center for American Progress director Jennifer Palmieri, the organization is focused around “driving the White House’s message and agenda.”
Think Progress is also closely allied with Media Matters under the umbrella of Podesta’s Progressive Media propaganda campaign. An investigation by the Daily Caller last year revealed that Media Matters is an Obama administration front that strategizes with the White House on a weekly basis on how to influence and direct the news media.
Though the Center for American Progress is shy about revealing its financial backers, according to SourceWatch, no less than 58 foundations have donated over $15 million dollars since 2003, as well as corporations and elitist philanthropists such as George Soros, who donated $3 million for “general support” in 2006.
Given that Think Progress is a little more than a PR firm for the Obama administration which routinely invents its own conspiracy theories in order to denigrate its ideological adversaries, it’s unsurprising that the organization is once again running defense for the federal government.

So Whats Next For Us? What's Down The Road?

OK the DHS federal agency’s purchase of over 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition over the past year along with the other federal agency's ammo buys over the last year and a half, and the thousands of armored vehicles DHS has bought (2700 of them). Just the two items they have bought in the last year should have you asking, "WTF" and making a stand for the truth, but I have asked a few friends at work and a few friends around the old home place and only 3 out of 12 people I talked to even heard of the ammo and armored vehicles at all. So this is a good point of how our main stream news is not doing there job to inform the people of this country! You get only what the White House wants you to get from the big news networks or they get cut off from the White House. So they play the game of, "We say what you want and do what you ask of us" Is this News? I know it's not the truth, nor the full news of the events of the day. We are living in crazy times, let me tell you why I say that;

#1 Obama has a rule like no other ever in his office, and is using it to lead us to Doom!

#2 The people of this country are Sheeple unlike ever before, maybe 90-95% of the country!

#3 Facebook, Twitter, and other outlets keep the sheeple brain dead and fill there days with junk!

#4 Poisons are in our Food, water, meds and the air we take in!!!!!

#5 Banks are taking money right from peoples pockets and acct!!!

#6 They want our guns!!!!

So what's next for us? What will they take next?

Will We Get The Truth? Hell No!!!!!
