7 Exercises To Help You Survive A Zombie Apocalypse

By
Are you in good enough shape to survive a zombie apocalypse? If it's you against 100 zombies intent on feasting on your tasty, tasty brains could you get away? Could you out run them? Could you fight them off? You'll have a better chance of making it if you know the 7 exercises for surviving a zombie apocalypse. Start doing these exercises now if you want a chance to survive.
1. Run 400 Meters The need for speed is critical for escaping zombies. Ideally you should be able to sprint all out for 400 meters in less than 90 seconds, even better is 60 seconds. That should get you far enough away to hide, get to your safe spot or grab a weapon. Work on sprints at least once a week. Try and run four to six 400 meter sprints per session and keep the time of all the runs no more than 10 seconds apart.
2. Speed Walk 5 Miles The ability to cover a long distance in a short amount of time should not be overlooked. You never know when you will have to move from hideout to hideout with your gear. Ideally you should do this carrying a backpack with at least 30 pounds of stuff in it. A weight vest is also a great substitution. Doing this in less than 45 minutes is a must. Go for a walk at least 3 times a week to build up you stamina then add the weight.
3. Rope Climbs You will need to get places that zombies cannot, like tree houses and the roofs of secured buildings. The best way to do that will be with a rope so you better be able to climb it. If you can't climb a rope yet there is no need to panic. Start by pulling yourself off the ground from your back and then lower yourself back down again. Ideally you will eventually be able to do two 20 foot rope climbs with only your hands (not using your feet) consecutively. Work on it, it's a great upper body exercise.
4. Using A Sledgehammer You'll more than likely have to smash a few zombie heads in with some blunt object, like a sledgehammer. A sledgehammer circuit will help you build strength and conditioning at the same time. Get an old worn out tire (the bigger the better) and go ahead to pound the hell out of it. A twelve pound sledgehammer will never seem so heavy after a workout! This will also help you by getting you in shape for chopping down trees, chopping up firewood and breaking down barricaded doors. Fun stuff. You can also flip the tire as an added workout.
5 Pull-Ups/Chin-Ups You have to master your own body weight and these exercises are first on the list. The ability to pull yourself up is an essential survival skill you must have. If you can't do these yet have no fear. Start today and progress until you can do it. Ultimately you want to be able to do a muscle-up.
6. Plyometric Training You have to be nimble to avoid zombies. Being able to jump up on and over things will is important. Box jumps, broad jumps, lateral bounding and tuck jumps will all work your legs and give you a cardio workout. Start with small boxes and obstacles until you can move up to 30" boxes and higher. Wear a weight vest to increase the difficulty.
7. Burpees If you are holed up in your hiding place from the zombies you'll have to stay in shape for your inevitable escape. With burpees you'll get a full body workout wherever you are. They work your legs, arms, chest and core as well as a great cardio workout. Start with sets of 10 until you can build up your stamina and do at least 50 in a row. Ultimately you should be able to do 100 in a row. It's quite the workout from just one exercise.

New Executive Order!!!!

Carl Herman
Washington’s Blog
Monday, March 19, 2012
“A mere demarcation on parchment of the constitutional limits (of government) is not a sufficient guard against those encroachments which lead to a tyrannical concentration of all the powers of government in the same hands.” - James Madison, Federalist Paper #48, 1788.
President Obama signed an Executive Order for “National Defense” yesterday that claims executive authority to seize all US resources and persons, including during peacetime, for self-declared “national defense.”

The EO claims power to place any American into military or “allocated” labor use(analysis here and here).

“American exceptionalism” is the belief that a 200+ year-old parchment in the National Archives has magical powers to somehow guarantee limited government from 1% tyranny, despite the specific and clear warnings of the US Founders, despite world history of repeated oligarchic/1% tyranny claiming to be for the “good of the people,” and despite US history’s descent into vicious psychopathy (short version here: US war history in 2 minutes) hidden in plain view with paper-thin corporate media propaganda.
I don’t know about you, but both my grandfathers were in the US military during the gruesome WW1. My father, father-in-law, and only uncle were in a brutal WW2. Both wars were functions of colonialism; a 1%’s vicious and rapacious greed.
Now, we’re all looking at WW3 that includes official policy and dark rhetoric for US first-strike use of nuclear weapons on Iran. This, after multiple current lie-started and treaty-violating wars surrounding Iran, increased US military preparations, multiple war-propagandizing US political “leaders,” and recent history of US overthrowing Iran’s democracy and 35 consecutive years of US war on Iran that killed over one million Iranians.
I don’t know about you, but I’m teaching the obvious crimes in war and money, destruction of Constitutional Rights rights (see specific links below), and asking students (of all ages) what they see to do about these clear facts. The first answer people see is to help people get over their “American exceptionalism” to recognize these massive crimes, and demand arrests of the obvious criminal “leadership.”
I don’t know about you, but I refuse to be silent in face of lying and criminal government policies that annually murder millions, harm billions, and loot trillions of the 99%’s dollars.
What will you do?
Here is the US government claiming it can Constitutionally assassinate Americans upon the non-reviewable dictate of the leader, as these criminals take psychopathic steps to murder Americans who expose their crimes.
Here is NDAA 2012 where US government claims it can Constitutionally disappear Americans and then appoint a tribunal with death sentence authority (unless unlimited detention is their choice). Here is the 2006 Military Commissions Act that says the same. This is fascist terrorism to silence Americans from communicating that the 1% are War Criminals to arrest NOW.
Here is US government claiming it can Constitutionally control-drown (waterboard) anyone they declare a “terrorist” as a 1% terror-tactic to silence Americans.
Again, what will you do?

Antibiotic Resistance Could Bring 'End of Modern Medicine'

By Katie Moisse | ABC News Blogs4 hrs ago
As bacteria evolve to evade antibiotics, common infections could become deadly, according to Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization.

Speaking at a conference in Copenhagen, Chan said antibiotic resistance could bring about "the end of modern medicine as we know it."

"We are losing our first-line antimicrobials," she said Wednesday in her keynote address at the conference on combating antimicrobial resistance. "Replacement treatments are more costly, more toxic, need much longer durations of treatment, and may require treatment in intensive care units."

Chan said hospitals have become "hotbeds for highly-resistant pathogens" like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, "increasing the risk that hospitalization kills instead of cures."

Indeed, diseases that were once curable, such as tuberculosis, are becoming harder and more expensive to treat.

Chan said treatment of multidrug resistant tuberculosis was "extremely complicated, typically requiring two years of medication with toxic and expensive medicines, some of which are in constant short supply. Even with the best of care, only slightly more than 50 percent of these patients will be cured."

Antibiotic-resistant strains of salmonella, E. coli, and gonorrhea have also been discovered.

"Some experts say we are moving back to the pre-antibiotic era. No. This will be a post-antibiotic era. In terms of new replacement antibiotics, the pipeline is virtually dry," said Chan. "A post-antibiotic era means, in effect, an end to modern medicine as we know it. Things as common as strep throat or a child's scratched knee could once again kill."

The dearth of effective antibiotics could also make surgical procedures and certain cancer treatments risky or even impossible, Chan said.

"Some sophisticated interventions, like hip replacements, organ transplants, cancer chemotherapy and care of preterm infants, would become far more difficult or even too dangerous to undertake," she said.

The development of new antibiotics now could help stave off catastrophe later. But few drug makers are willing to invest in drugs designed for short term use.

"It's simply not profitable for them," said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. "If you create a new drug to red cholesterol, people will be taking that drug every day for the rest of their lives. But you only take antibiotics for a week or maybe 10 days."

Schaffner likened the dilemma to Ford releasing a car that could only be driven if every other vehicle wasn't working.

"While we try to encourage the pharmaceutical industry to create new antibiotics, we have to be very prudent in their use," he said.

But there are ways to limit the potential for bacteria to develop antibiotic resistance: Use antibiotics appropriately and only when needed; follow treatment correctly; and restrict the use of antibiotics in food production to therapeutic purposes.

"At a time of multiple calamities in the world, we cannot allow the loss of essential antimicrobials, essential cures for many millions of people, to become the next global crisis," said Chan.

Doomsday Survey: 51% of Americans Believe a Financial Collapse Is Imminent; 85% Say Country Is Overwhelmingly Under-Prepared

Mac Slavo
March 13th, 2012
SHTFplan.com
A recent survey of 1,007 nationally representative Americans ages 18 and over suggests that most of us believe a doomsday scenario of some kind will occur in the next twenty five years.
With three million preppers in the U.S. getting ready for widespread disaster, gun sales sky rocketing, and retail precious metals purchases at unprecedented levels, the results of the survey performed by Kelton Research on behalf of National Geographic shouldn’t be surprising.
Among other things, the survey asked respondents to choose which natural or man-made doomsday scenarios they believed are most likely to happen in the United States.
The result suggest that Americans are more aware of the dangers facing our fragile society today than ever before.
National Geographic Survey via The Ready Store:
Which of the following, if any, do you think might happen in the United States in the next 25 years? Please choose all that apply.
About how many years from now, if ever, do you think it’s likely that the world will experience a major catastrophe? Your best guess is fine.
If a major catastrophe were to happen in your lifetime, do you think it would be…
Which of the following do you think is a smarter investment?
Which of the following, if any, have you ever done to prepare for a potential catastrophe? Please choose all that apply.
Which of the following explain why you are not as prepared as you think you need to be for a potential catastrophe? Please choose all that apply. (Among respondents who think they are not fully prepared)
In the event of a catastrophe, do you think that most Americans will be…
The Doomsday Preppers Survey was conducted by Kelton Research between January 3rd and January 10th, 2012 using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas are set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population ages 18 and over.
While millions may be preparing, and over half of Americans expect a major catastrophic natural or man-made event to occur in the course of their lifetimes, at least 25% of Americans – fully 80 million – have taken no active steps to prepare themselves for disaster because they simply don’t believe it’s a possibility.
Our guess is that these overwhelmingly under-prepared individuals will be the first ones screaming for FEMA to give them food and calling for confiscation and redistribution of the supplies of others.

Space Storm Packs Late Punch, Biggest Since '04

By Kerry Sheridan | AFP

A strong space weather storm packed a late punch overnight and ended up being the most significant geomagnetic event since 2004, US experts said Friday, warning more disruption was coming this weekend.
The fusillade of radiation from the Sun caused limited power grid upsets, forced airlines to reroute around the poles and sparked vivid displays of the Northern Lights in some parts of the world.
The event began late Tuesday with a series of explosions on the Sun that sent charged particles hurtling toward Earth, but the storm appeared to fizzle on arrival Thursday, causing no power outages or problems with GPS navigation systems as expected.
Conditions changed late Thursday that boosted the ferocity of the storm, raising it to the initially forecast G3 level of "strong" on a scale of one to five, said Bob Rutledge who heads the space weather forecast office at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
"We ended up getting some of the strong storming that was expected," he said explaining that change was due to a flip in the magnetic field inside the coronal mass ejection that burst off from the Sun.
"When you look at the storm overall for length and strength, it is arguably the strongest storm since November 2004," he said.
People across the northern US states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Washington reported seeing the nighttime light show caused by the aurora borealis when highly charged particles interact with the Earth's magnetic field, creating a colorful glow.
And although power industry operators have "certainly seen these disturbances on their systems... it should all be well within what they are capable of handling," Rutledge added.
As the current storm wound down Friday, Rutledge warned there was a potential for more disruptions by Sunday due to a flare overnight from the same region on the Sun, known as 1429, that has been acting up since early in the week.
The solar flare reached a level two out of five and was not as big as Tuesday's flare but it was associated with a coronal mass ejection that Rutledge said would make its way to Earth early on March 11.
"It is going to affect the Earth. It is headed fairly directed at us," he said.
"We believe that it could cause storming levels that could reach the G3 level again. We don't believe it would have maybe quite the sustained intensity that the storm we just got out of had."
Geomagnetic and radiation storms are growing more frequent as the Sun leaves its solar minimum period and moves into a solar maximum over the coming years, but people are generally protected by Earth's magnetic field.
However, some experts are concerned that because the world is more reliant on GPS and satellite technology now than it was during the last solar maximum, more disruptions to modern life are likely.

“Anti-Occupy” Law Is Signed By Obama

Obama Signs “Anti-Occupy” Law

By Daniel Hertz

In certain corners of the Internet, concern has been gathering about another so-called “Anti-Occupy” bill.
Last week, H.R. 347, otherwise known as the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act, passed the House 399-3, and on Thursday it was signed into law by President Obama. In response, bloggers from the libertarian Daily Paul to the leftist Daily Kos accused the federal government of gutting the First Amendment.
Did something important happen while the rest of us were rolling our eyes at Rush Limbaugh?
According to the ACLU, there is indeed something disturbing about H.R. 347—but it had already been part of federal law long before last week.
The new bill modifies a 1971 law that restricted entering or blocking public areas cordoned off by the Secret Service while a protected individual is passing through, or during major public events like the Super Bowl or party nominating conventions. Violators can face up to a year in jail; if they’re carrying a dangerous weapon, it’s ten.
Of course, it’s probably a good thing that the police can arrest strangers with guns who try to get a little too close to the president. But more recently, this law has been used to shunt protestors at major political events into “free speech zones,” isolated from the crowds—and cameras—that might give their constitutionally-protected demonstrations some heft. Another issue is that the Department of Homeland Security has fairly wide latitude in what areas it can declare off-limits.
This has major implications for anyone planning protests at the NATO or G8 conferences later this spring, including Occupy. But that would have been the case whether or not H.R. 347 had passed.
What, then, has changed? First, certain parts of the District of Columbia, like the White House lawn, were added to the list of federally protected areas. (Previously, they had only been covered under DC trespassing statutes.) Second, and somewhat more ominously, it’s now easier for prosecutors to convict people arrested under the law. Before, violators had to “willfully and knowingly” enter a protected area, meaning that they knew the area was protected, and knew that it was illegal for them to be there. H.R. 347 deletes the word “willfully,” meaning that prosecutors no longer need to prove that someone knew what they were doing was illegal to convict them.
In other words, Congress removed a hurdle in enforcing the law without actually adding any new restrictions to the First Amendment. Then again, the restrictions that already exist are enough to concern anyone who believes the right to assembly is a crucial part of the democratic process.

Surging Gun Purchases.......

Smith & Wesson Reports Surging Gun Purchases On Back of Fears Over Obama Re-Election
60 per cent hike in backlog orders as gun stores report record monthly sales
Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
Friday, March 9, 2012
Prolonged economic uncertainty is not proving too much of a challenge for firearms makers like Smith & Wesson, whose shares today soared 18 per cent after the company announced a 60 per cent surge in backlog orders, demand driven by a prevailing belief that Barack Obama will launch a crackdown on the second amendment if he wins a second term in the White House.

“Shares in Smith & Wesson Holding Corp (SWHC.O) shot up nearly 18 percent to their highest in more than two years on Friday, after the gun maker hiked its full-year sales forecast on a higher order backlog, reflecting strong demand for its guns and rifles,” reports Reuters.
The company’s shares have gained more than 26 percent since the beginning of this year as a result of profits outperforming estimates in four consecutive quarters.
Gun sales are being driven by a combination of factors, including fear of rising crime caused by economic turmoil, but primarily as an insurance policy against a second Obama term, which gun enthusiasts fear will be used as a lame duck tool to gut second amendment rights.
Gun stores are reporting a record number of sales for the month of February, with suggestions that Obama stands a good chance of winning re-election causing firearm and ammunition shortages nationwide.
“Look who the Republicans are trying to put against Obama,” DeWayne Irwin, owner of the Cheaper Than Dirt gun store told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “It’s the Keystone Kops and people are getting scared. People are terrified he’s going to get re-elected and then he won’t care about getting votes next time. He’ll just pass whatever legislation he wants.”
NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre even suggested during a CPAC speech last month that Obama was deliberately playing it low key on the second amendment during his first term so that he could put conservatives to sleep on the issue and then come out fighting.
“All that first term, lip service to gun owners is just part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment during his second term,” said LaPierre.

Back in December, gun purchases hit a record all time one day high on Black Friday, and gun sales have been through the roof every year since Obama took office.
As we reported back in November 2008 just before Obama took office, the perceived anti-gun agenda of a President backed by a Democrat-controlled House and Senate prompted a record surge in firearms purchases.
In March 2011, President Obama told gun control advocate Sarah Brady that his administration was working “under the radar” to sneak attack the second amendment rights of American citizens.
Just over a month later it emerged that the administration had been sending guns to Mexican drug gangs via the “Fast and Furious” program while simultaneously blaming border violence on the second amendment.
2010 FBI records and Google Trends research indicated that the surge in firearms purchases was also being driven by first time gun buyers who were concerned about rising crime and the potential for an economic collapse.
Americans’ lack of confidence in their leadership is so fervent that they are now “pre-revolutionary,” according to pollster Pat Caddell. This threat of civil disorder, allied with an armed population, has prompted authorities to prepare for the worst, with the US military on standby for what the U.S. Army War College’s Strategic Institute describes in a report as “strategic shock.”
“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security,” stated the report, authored by [Ret.] Lt. Col. Nathan Freir, adding that the military may be needed to quell “purposeful domestic resistance”.

Something To Think About

WHY I'M DEPRESSED
Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel , "Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land."
Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land."
Today, the government has stolen your shovel, taxed your a...sses, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land to China ! I was so depressed last night thinking about my retirement, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, etc . . . I called a Suicide Hotline.
I had to press 1 for English. I was then connected to a call center in Pakistan . I told them I was suicidal. They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck....

EMERGENCY WATER

                                    by Ken Larson
American Survival Guide Vol. 13, No. 4

To the surprise of many, the need for water is much higher
than for food.  Many people have lived for 30 days with no food,
but without water, after three or four days you are in serious
trouble.
People tend to underestimate how much water is actually needed
to perform normal, routine tasks of daily living.
Drinking water is the primary need, but you may need
additional water for baths, cooking, flushing toilets, cleaning
eating utensils, washing clothes and other chores.
Water availability is affected in natural and man made
disasters.  In every disaster, the majority of the general
population is totally unprepared for even a small interruptions in
normal utility and food distribution services.  In most disasters,
the victims expect and sometimes demand that "someone" provide
needed protection, water, shelter and food.
There are myriad ways the water supply can be disrupted.  The
most common way is due to lack of electricity.  With no
electricity, there will be no water from water purification plants
or your well--unless it is a non-electric well.
The second most common way is a water main rupture.  Recently,
more than 10,000 people in the southeastern United States were out
of water for over two weeks due to such a rupture.
Wells can be contaminated by flooding, and well pumps can
become damaged by flooding.  Freezing weather also takes its toll
on well and city water lines.
Local streams are never safe during disasters because raw
sewerage and polluted surface water can enter the streams.
During a recent hurricane , the wind blew an excessive amount
of leaves into the affected area's reservoirs.  The water turned
yellow for three weeks and acquired an objectionable taste due to
the abnormal amount of leaves that were decomposing.
Container storage -- certain plastic containers such as
drywall buckets and plastic trash containers are not intended for
food contact and may leach undesirable chemicals into stored water.
These containers should be used for transporting water or for
storage of water not used for consumption.
Although the 5 gallon drywall bucket is not good for storing
drinking water, it is an excellent choice for transporting water
and for storage of water not used for consumption.
Any container used for transportation or for storage needs a
top.  during transportation, the top reduces spillage.  Tray
transporting water in the care trunk in a bucket without a top and
you will see how much sloshes out. During storage, the top keeps
out dirt, dust, insects, etc.
The 5 gallon buckets used by restaurants for food products are
excellent for storing drinking water.  If no containers are
available, plastic sheets or bags can be used to line porous
containers for storing water in emergencies.  A depression can ever
be dug in the ground and lined with plastic to hold water
temporarily.
In storing water for emergency uses, most authorities
recommend a minimum of 2 gallons per person per day.  This should
include one half gallon for drinking and the balance for other
uses.  It is preferable not to ration water in a survival situation
because this may have adverse affects on the health of people
involved.
I store non-drinking water for dishwashing, toilets, washing
clothes, etc. in 5 gallon plastic drywall buckets.  My drinking
water is stored in out bleach bottles and plastic milk jugs.  I add
16 drops of liquid bleach (4-6 percent sodium hypochlorite) per
gallon of clear water to protect it during storage form the growth
of micro-organisms.  I suggest storing an extra jug of bleach to
purify any new water that is of questionable quality.
Be careful not to misidentify bleach bottles as containing
drinking water if you also have bleach on hand. This is especially
dangerous where children are involved.  Always remove the bleach
label and replace it with the word "WATER" in large indelible
letters on the jugs in which the water is stored.
The Utah State University Extension Service offers the
following instructions for heat sterilization when using glass
containers to store water:  "fill clean fruit jars with water,
leaving one inch of head space at the top of the jar.  Place clean
sterilized lids on the jar and process the water in a boiling water
bath as fruit juice is processed.  Quart jars should be processed
20 minutes.  Two quart jars 25 minutes."
Whatever the container used, it is probably a good idea to
date each container with a large magic marker or other marking
instrument. I'm glad I did mark my first water storage jugs because
I now have water that is 8 years old.  Water is used on a first-
in first-out basis.  My water supplies have been used many times
in the last 8 years.
Since I do own a generator, a power outage will shut down my
well.  No electricity, no electric well pump.  On several other
occasions, my well pump had maintenance problems and the stored
water came in very handy while the pump was being repaired.
Don't store plastic containers near fuels, pesticides or
similar materials.  The vapors from these can penetrate the plastic
and contaminate the water.  Also, store water in the dark to
protect the plastic from sunlight.
One problem commonly encountered in water storage is inventory
control.  You must be diligent in replacing the water you use and
rotate your inventory at least every several years.  Use the oldest
inventory first.  Any questionable water you have in storage can
be used for non-drinking purposes.
The local county extension service will test your water for
purity.  This is a good idea when you have water supplies that have
not been rotated for several years.
If you have enough advance notice of a coming water emergency
or possible emergency, fill up extra empty mill cartons, jars,
bathtubs, sinks, wading pools, trash cans and or any other
available container.  Obviously water in garbage cans would be used
for non-drinking purposes unless filtered and purified.
OTHER WATER SOURCES --  You can use the water for the toilet
tank (not the bowl) and it will offer several gallons.  You may
want to look in your tank right now to see if it needs a good
cleaning.
Trapped water in house plumbing lines offers several gallons
of clean water.  As soon as the water pressure goes off, be careful
to shut off your house lines from the street.  This action will
insure you do not draw in contaminated water or allow your trapped
water to flow back into the connecting municipal system.  Next,
turn off the heat sources to your water heater.  To gain access to
trapped water in the house line, crack the faucet at the lowest
level and drain the lines.  I have installed a faucet in my
basement to insure I can collect the water from the lines that run
under my house.  The basement is where I plan to be during a
weather alert.
Your water heater tank holds 30 - 40 gallons.  Check your
water heater tank because it may have a foot or more of sediment
in the tank bottom.  Sediment removal is a good reason to drain the
tank every year.  In addition, the removal of sediment will improve
the water heater's efficiency.  The hot water tank can be drained
by opening the faucet at the bottom of the tank.  You may need to
open the hot water faucet elsewhere in the house to allow the
release of the vacuum to allow a free flow of water.  The water
inlet valve (faucet) should be turned off if you doubt the quality
of the inlet water.  If the inlet valve is turned off, you may need
to vent the water tank by opening the "pop off" valve lever that
is used to allow over heated tanks to vent excessive pressure. The
faucet at the bottom is threaded to receive a regular garden hose.
The water in a water bed can also be used.  Only use this
water for non-drinking purposes because of the possibility of
algaecide chemicals in the water and plastic chemicals being
leached into the water.
A swimming pool offers a large volume of stored water for non-
drinking use.  In one case a swimming pool provided a whole
neighborhood with water after a hurricane.  The neighbors set up
a temporary shower in the backyard next to the pool.  Others who
lived nearby carried the water back home in any containers they
could find.
If it rains, place buckets or barrels under rain gutter down
spouts.  You may have to cut or disconnect them so the water can
flow into the container.  If your container is not clean, you can
line it with plastic such as a clean garbage bag. Plastic sheets
can be placed on a hillside or be strung between trees to funnel
water into your containers.
PURIFYING WATER -- Pollution can affect ice, snow, water in
streams and in shallow wells causing these water sources to be
unsafe.  Even clear streams can have parasites in them.  Unpolluted
water must be boiled to assure complete destruction of any
dangerous organisms.
Properly stored water is the safest in an emergency. If you
have to use water from an unknown source or of unknown quality, be
aware that the following methods of purifying water do not
guarantee the safety of the water but will reduce the risks
involved.
Boiling water is one of the safest methods of water
purification.  It should be boiled for at least 20 minutes to
insure that bacteria are killed.  Boiling does not remove
pollution. The boiling process will make the water taste flat since
some air has been driven out.  To add back the oxygen and to
improve the taste, pour the water several times from one container
to another. Another method is to pour the water into a closed
container and vigorously shake it.  A small piece of wood or a
pinch of salt can be added to the boiling water to improve the
taste.
Learn how to start an outdoor fire to be used in boiling
water.  Do not depend on electricity or gas for your heat source.
Only use chemical purification for questionable water if
boiling is not possible. Understand that organic matter in the
water increased the amount of chemical needed.  The colder the
water, the more time needed for the chemical to work.
Add 16 drops of bleach per gallon of water for clear water and
double that amount for cloudy or sediment-filled water.  Mix well
and wait for 30 minutes before using.  You should be able to smell
the bleach after 30 minutes. If not, repeat the process until you
smell the bleach, otherwise do not use the water.  If you leave the
container uncovered for several hours, the chlorine taste will be
reduced and the water will be more palatable.
Always use fresh liquid bleach because it will lose its
strength over time.  Double the recommended amounts if the bleach
is over one year old and do not use it if over two hears old.
Water purification tablets can be used to purify water.  They
are readily available from sporting goods stores and military
surplus outlets.
Use fresh tablets.  Normal shelf life for iodine tablets is
3 to 5 years if unopened. iodine tablets work better than bleach
or halazone tablets for certain intestinal parasites. In addition,
halazone tablets have a shelf life of only 2 year.
Commercial filters combine a filter substance and active
ingredients to filter and treat the water at the same time.  Some
brands are not as effective as they claim.
Clear water should be used whenever possible when purification
is needed.  If sediment is present, it will settle out in time and
the clear water can be poured off or the water can be poured
through a cloth or coffee filter to speed up the process.
A novel method to clear up water is to use a cloth siphon
arrangement.  Place the full cloudy water container higher than the
empty clean water container.  Roll up a clean dry piece of cloth
and put one end in the upper container and the other end in the
lower clean container.  If the cloth in the lower container is
several inches below the cloudy water's water line, then a siphon
effect will begin and the water will be filtered.  This is a very,
very slow process, but is good to know about.
In the distilling process, questionable water is boiled and
allowed to condense into safe water.
One method is to allow the water vapor escaping out of a tea
kettle to enter an inverted milk jug.  The water vapor will
condense in the milk jug and run out into a pan set nearby to
collect it.
Another method is to run the water vapor through copper tubing
(same as used in your house) to condense the vapor into pure water.
For quantity production, try to visualize a moonshiners still.  Use
a larger closed container heated over a fire with copper tubing
coiled several times to make such a still.
CONSERVATION -- The more you conserve your water in an
emergency, the less you will use or need from storage. For example,
toilets use 3-4 gallons per each flush.  Add several bricks in the
tank to reduce usage (be careful not to have too much waste for
each flush).  And toilets need not always be flushed after each
use.  You might also want to build an outdoor toilet trench such
as is described in "The Boy Scout Handbook" or other publications.
Stretch out the periods between your baths or showers, or use
a Navy type shower procedure, where you turn on the water to wet
down, turn off water, soap up and then turn on the water to rinse
off. If water is very limited, take a sponge bath when ever
practical.
Do not waste water washing clothing other than under clothing.
Before you wash, leave clothes outside over night and they will
pick up additional moister reducing the amount of wash water
needed.  A heavy dew will make a wash towel moist enough to use for
a sponge bath.  It is even better to roll the clothes in the dew
to make them very wet before beginning the wash.
Never throw water away without figuring out other uses for it.
For example, use the tub water for flushing a toilet.  Save the
water when you wash your hands and use it for the initial clothes
washing water.
Do not dispose of dirty water just because it has sediment in
it.  You will be surprised how much sediment in dirty water will
settle out over night or in several days if left undisturbed. The
clearer surface water can be used again for non-drinking purposes.
Finally , it is very important to wash hands when preparing
food.  Intestinal problems can rapidly dehydrate the body and cause
severe health problems.
As you can see, water storage is very simple to accomplish.
A little advance preparation can add a great deal of security in
our current water-sensitive and highly technological times as well
as in any emergency situation.
