Survival Skills # 25 How To Use A FoodSaver
How To Use A FoodSaver
There are a lot of different vacuum Sealers. If you shop at Wal-Mart you will see FoodSaver and a off brand I think it's made by Black and Decker. But let me stop you right here; DON'T BUY A OFF BRAND!!!! Get a FoodSaver and use real FoodSaver bags. I have used the off brands and they just don't work as well as the real deal. So with that said what you will need is the FoodSaver that comes with the jar sealer, this little item will let you use mason jars to store dry foods. If you don't get the kit with the jar sealer then go on line and order one it is a great little item. I use the jar sealer with mason jars to store potato flakes(Mashed potato's), beans, rice and other dry goods.
We you start to use your FoodSaver we will ask yourself how did I live without this?
What I do is go to Sam's or Wal-Mart and buy dry goods in bulk, like sugar, salt, flour, rice, beans, and other dry goods. I have 5 gallon buckets with lids. So I separate the items into small bags, like 1/2 or 1/4 lbs per bag and use the foodsaver to seal the items then I pack 5 gallon bucket with an item. The last time I did this I bagged a 25lbs of sugar and 25lbs of salt. I mark each bucket with the date it was done and the item that is in it. You can do this with most dry items. The foodsaver will give you 5X the shelf life for your foods. So salt is good for 10 years the foodsaver will give you 50 years of good salt, just remember your food needs to be in a cool dry place in your home. Never put stored food outside the home in a shed, shop or any other place where heat and very cold will get to the food. Make a place in your home and rotate your stock.
The FoodSaver is a great little survival item. You can vacuum seal medications to store and items to put into your BOB. I even have important papers put into a bag to have in my BOB. Use you imagination and you will have fun and store your goods for the event of doom that is coming.
