40 Items to Barter in a Post-Collapse World
40 Items to Barter in a Post-Collapse World

August 28, 2012 SurvivalWoman

Do you know how to barter? In preparedness circles, the term barter is used lot when describing a post SHTF situation when goods and services may no longer be available through normal channels. According to Wikipedia, ”barter is a method of exchange by which goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods or services without using a medium of exchange, such as money”.

A lot of people think of bartering as something to do when they are down an out, perhaps unemployed, or low on cash. But nothing could be further from the truth. Bartering has been around from eons and is simply a smart way to acquire goods and services under the radar screen.

Today I would like to share some very simple tips for bartering as well as my own suggested list of items and skills that may be useful for barter in a post-collapse economy.

How does simple barter work?

In a simple barter, you look for someone who is looking for a particular kinds of goods or services in exchange for goods or services that you may want. For example, let’s say you do plumbing work but you need a some gardening equipment. A simple barter would be exchanging some plumbing repairs for a used plow or rototiller.

Getting started is easy. One of the simplest things to do is to put up an small ad on the local community bulletin board, perhaps at the grocery store or bowling alley. (And by the way, I don’t know why but bowling alley’s are particularly good for this sort of thing.) You can also peruse Craigslist or the Little Nickel want ads for people trying to sell the item you need. The next step is to simply phone them ask and suggest a trade.
One of the very best ways to barter, though, is to put the word out among like-minded friends, relatives and neighbors. Let them know what you have for trade and see what they offer in return. What I am describing here is bartering in its most simplistic form but I think you get the gist.

Beyond simple bartering there are more complicated and dare I say sophisticated scenarios such as three way barters and barter clubs. But that gets beyond the scope of this article which is merely to get you into the bartering mindset.

The Best Items to Use For Barter in a Post-Collapse Word

There are a lot of different opinions as to what items will be best for barter in a post-collapse world where the underground economy may be the only viable economy for the passing of goods and services. That said, consider this a starting point as you begin to acquire goods for barter.
In no particular order, consider accumulating some of the following items for barter purposes. And keep in mind that in a post-collapse world, the items do not necessarily have to be new, but simply serviceable.
  1. Water purification supplies including purification tabs and filters
  2. Hand tools including hatchets, saws, machetes and general fix-it tools
  3. Fire making supplies, including lighters, matches, flint fire steel
  4. Sanitary supplies including toilet paper, feminine products and diapers
  5. Disposable razors and razor blades
  6. Fuel, any and all kinds (gas, diesel, propane, kerosene)
  7. Prescription drugs, painkillers, and antibiotics
  8. First aid remedies such as cough syrup, cortisone cream, boil-ese, calamine lotion and topical pain relievers
  9. Spirits such as bourbon, rum, gin, and vodka
  10. Coffee and tea (instant coffee is okay)
  11. Solar battery charger and rechargeable batteries
  12. Standard Batteries
  13. Reading glasses
  14. Paracord
  15. Bags, including large garbage bags as well as smaller zip-close bags
  16. Plastic sheeting
  17. Duct tape
  18. Tie Wraps
  19. Heavy plastic sheets and tarps
  20. Toiletries including toothpaste, dental floss soaps, shampoo (tip: save those small sized toiletries that are provided by hotels and motels)
  21. Condoms
  22. Latex or Nitrile gloves in a variety of sizes
  23. Hard candy
  24. Fishing supplies
  25. Knives of various types including fixed blades, kitchen knives, and box cutters.
  26. Condiments and Spices
  27. Paperback books on a variety of subjects
  28. Tobacco and cigarette rolling supplies
  29. Amusements such as playing cards, crossword puzzle books, Sudoku
  30. Pencils & paper
  31. Pepper spray
  32. Garden seeds
  33. Flashlights
  34. Vinegar and baking soda to use in DIY cleaning supplies
  35. Empty spray bottles and squirt bottles
  36. Hand pumps for both air and liquids
  37. Mylar blankets and tents
  38. Hand warmers
  39. Sewing and mending supplies
  40. Knitting or crochet needles and Yarn
One thing you will notice that I have not included firearms or ammo and for good reason. In a post-collapse society, you might not know your barter partners well and may run the risk that they will use these items against you so that they can steal the rest of you stuff. One person’s opinion, anyway.

A Caveat for Businesses

As you get started with bartering in a pre-collapse world – and after all, like any other survival skill, you should hone your skills now – keep in mind that in the United States, the IRS does have some rules for business bartering and most certainly, states probably do as well as it pertains to Business and Occupation taxes. Just something to keep in mind.

The Final Word

Times are tough. Many are unemployed. And many have had their retirement funds decimated by the sneaky (and dare we say corrupt?) Wall Street types. Perhaps you have a useful skill. Or perhaps you have a healthy flock of egg laying chickens that provide more than you can consume. Whatever you have in excess capacity, now is the time to learn to trade your skill or extra commodities for something you either need or covet.
There are lots of resources online, at the libraries, and in eBooks to help you acquire bartering skills. Start small but start now. Bartering is the “in” thing to do these days.
Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Here We Go!!!

Well it's about a month till we go vote and myself as most others are thinking what is ahead? Not what is down the road for the country we all know that this country is doomed! I'm thinking as to what false flag will be pulled or will anything happen? With the way things look now it's any ones guess as who the New World Order wants in office and if you ask me they are the same just with a little different wrapping! So will we hit Iran? Will it be made to look like Iran started something and we jump them? Who knows what is down the road and who knows what craziness is ahead? The one thing I know is if you are prepping and you are planning to survive you are ahead of the game and ahead of 99% of this country.
This is the part of the post where I tell you to kick up your prepping and keep your head into the game! And to be ready for anything, as we roll closer and closer to The day of the Vote in November at anytime there could be a fake attack or a Bullshit set up to pull us into a new war or to make this country look open to new attacks. I will not put it past this group in office to stir up something big and get us into a mess that could start WWIII! Hell all it would take is a good nudge in the right direction and before you know it Russia and China could be on our ass like white on rice!!!! And then on the other hand we could see Nov. 6th come and go with no trouble ay all, for all we know it don't matter who is in office. I'm sure the NWO is in the pocket of both of them and in there heads as well. So what can you and me do? What can we do to stop this? I don't think we can do a thing to stop it, but we can prep and get ready to fight the good fight after the collapse. Stock up of the needed items to give them a damn good fight. Stock up on guns, ammo, food, water, seeds, and medical supplies and all the needed stuff for the end of the world as we know it! I add to my preps every week and every time I walk in to Wal-Mart I now buy some ammo, it may just be 2-4 50 round boxes of 22LR or a box of 12ga shells but I get something every time I go now. And once a week I make a trip just for preps to Sportsman's Warehouse or Wal-Mart to add something new to the prep list, last week it was wooden matches and next week I plan to add some more lamp oil. My plan is to add a little here and a little there and save up for the big items. One of the next big Items is a new gun and I'm working on the funds right now. The point of this is make a plan and stick to it! You can spend as little as $5-$20 week and still add stuff to your prep list. A friend of mine back home in North Carolina is prepping on a budget and is going to the .99 cent and Dollar stores and buying prep items. It can be done and we all need to have a plan and stick to it.
Here in California over the last week to ten days the price of gas has gone up .75 cents and in some parts it's gone up over a dollar, it's getting crazy and I know with the price of gas going up the price of food and everything in the store will be going up with it. We are running out of time and the collapse is getting near so prep like crazy and stick to your plan.

Tent or Tarp????

Info found at: http://survivalcache.com/

Survival Debate: Tent or Tarp

Survival Debate Tent Tarp
This week on survival debate we’ll discuss the advantages of carrying a tent or a tarp in your survival gear or Bug Out Bag. Do you prefer the comfort of a tent and live with the weight, or do you save room in your bag and go light with a tarp?

Tent

Survival TentPro:
  • Better Weather Protection
  • Protection from Insects
  • Easier to Set Up
  • Self Standing
  • Can be Waterproof
  • See our recommended Survival Tents
Con:
  • Heavier
  • Less Versatility
  • More Expensive

Tarp

Survival TarpPro:
  • Lighter
  • Versatility
  • Cheap
  • See our recommended Survival Tarps
Con:
  • Requires External Support
  • Less Weather Protection
  • No Insect Protection

Middle Ground

The only real middle ground for this debate is taking both, because you certainly wouldn’t want to go without at least one if you could help it. Taking both gives you a whole lot of options, and given how cheap and light a tarp is I am tempted to do that myself.

What if you have a large family or group?

That is a problem that we have been thinking about. One of the cool products that we found is a dome shelter system that can sleep up to 30 to 40 adults depending on the size of the shelter. Check them out by clicking here.

Where do you stand?

Personally, if I had to pick one, I would go with a tent. The amount of weather and insect protection you get from a tent really outweighs the weight issue for me. That, and long term tarp camping is just going to be miserable and eventually downright dangerous.
If you take a tent, tell us about it, and why you chose your tent. If you only have a tarp, was that a decision, or just because you haven’t bought a tent yet?

Winter Preparedness Checklist

By Cynthia Ewer
When wintry weather blows, will your family be prepared?
Winter brings special seasonal challenges to an organized home. Winter storms can make navigating roads and walkways hazardous; power outages and snow days highlight any family's readiness for cold weather.
Take time now to review your family's emergency preparedness with this Winter Preparedness Checklist. It'll help you prepare your home and automobile for cold-weather hazards.

Out and About

Will your home welcome winter visitors safely? Get ready for snow, ice or rain on walks and driveways with:
  • Snow shovel
  • De-icing compound
  • Waterproof floor mats

The Inside Story

Household emergency supplies should include enough food, water and supplies to last four days without power or help. Check your home emergency kit against this basic checklist:
  • Food that doesn't require heating or refrigeration, such as canned meats, soups and stews, cereal, and energy bars
  • Manual can opener
  • Paper plates, cups and plastic utensils
  • 1 gallon of water per person per day (allow enough for four days)
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Battery-powered clock
  • Cellular phone
  • First-aid kit (printable first-aid kit checklist)
  • Four-day supply of prescription medicines
  • Blanket and cold-weather clothing for each family member
  • Pet food and additional water for household pets

On The Road:

Winter transportation can mean ice, snow, and hazardous roads. Road conditions can change in an instant. Before traveling, give cars a winter preparedness exam:
  • Check antifreeze
  • Check and replace older batteries
  • Remember to keep the gas tank near full to avoid freezing water in the fuel line
  • Check tires and spare tire for proper inflation
Make sure automobiles contain the following emergency supplies:
  • Bag of sand, road salt or non-clumping cat litter. The bag's extra weight means better traction, and the contents can be spread under slipping tires.
  • Ice scraper
  • Jumper cables
  • Small shovel (to dig snow away from wheels, or scatter sand on roadway)
  • Tire chains (every driver should practice putting them on)
  • Flares or reflective triangle to warn other motorists if you break down
  • Blanket
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Gallon jug of drinking water
  • First aid kit
When traveling by car, include emergency food and clothing for each traveler. Pack supplies in a backpack in case you need to abandon your car.
An emergency backpack should include:
  • Jacket, hat, gloves and sturdy, snow-proof boots for each traveler
  • Nonperishable food
  • Cellular phone
  • Money

Fall Is Here

So fall is here and with it cold weather will follow. I can't tell it's fall yet because it's still high 90's and 100's here in the Sacramento Valley. But soon the weather will cool off and the wind and rain will come again. I am so ready for some cold weather and some rain, but to get to the heart of this post and I would like to say I'm sorry for not posting more over the last month this new blogger update has me relearning how to use blogger all over again so it's like I'm new to this posting thing again. So in a little more than a month we will have to go vote and I will not tell you how I think you or anyone should vote. I think each and everyone needs to think out there own vote and vote with there heart as well as there mind. Sad thing is there are so many things not said in this election that needed to been said, like:
#1 Why is the dollar being killed?
#2 Why is the government with FEMA building camps inside the USA?
#3 Why are parts of the government buying ammo that should not have it and why so much of it?
#4 Who is really in charge of the USA, our leaders or outside bankers? Because the bankers pull all the strings to the leaders of this country!
#5 What plan does the NWO have for this country? And yes we know there is a NWO!!!!
#6 Why does NBC,ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and MSNBC all report Bullshit and not real news?
#7 Why does the new I-Phone 5 get more press than the news of GMO killing people or the news of how the great leaders of this country have let them add all kinds of junk into of foods, medications and our lives?
#8 Why is it OK to talk about Mitt Romney's Church but if we talk about Obama's Church we are racist? Wait I remember, because Obama's Pastor was a "RACIST"!!!!!
#9 And tell me again why we can't see the hard copy of Obama's Birth Certificate?
#10 Let me get this right all the spending over the last four years was all because Of Bush? Mr. Obama if you get back in office who's fought will the next four year be pinned on?

Go vote because it's your right to do so, for now!!! Everyday we come closer to collapse and I feel as Nov, 6th comes around we are going to see a false flag event in this country, I may be wrong but I bet you something crazy happens before Nov 6th. Keep safe and keep an eye open for trouble!!! I pray everyday that this country will survive but I just don't see it making it much longer.

Keep up your prepping and stay strong, our time is very short!!!
