Barter Items In The Post-Apocalyptic World

Check your pockets right now. Chances are, you might have some funny colored paper with dead people’s faces on it, and maybe some jingly pieces of semi-precious metal. Do you know what those will be worth after the collapse of society? Nothing. So in this new world, with a barter economy, you’re going to need some things worth trading and after the collapse, gold and silver will be nice but only worth what you will be able to get for it. What will become the new currency? Here is my list of some possibilities. Post to the comments and add what you think needs to be on here this is just a short list and not even close to the full list of barter items.

AMMUNITION: A firearm is only useful when loaded. Ammunition will become incredibly rare, highly desired and expensive. Those who have weapons will need ammunition to stay in control; those with ammunition can control them. Just imagine you meet up with a commune of people, by trading a box of shotgun shells, your not only gained respect and admiration, your ensured survival of the group and now can probably join up (remember there’s something to be said for safety in numbers). Just be careful who you give ammo to… probably not wise to give them to someone who will turn around and use them on you.
FOOD: Any canned or dry foods will be needed so this will be a good form of trade or barter. But remember you will need food so don’t trade away your food unless you have extra.

GASOLINE OR FUEL: Gasoline or fuel means combustion engines, machinery, heat and light from lanterns. Those who are left out there will covet anything that provide heat or make their motors run. Lamp oil will be very needed, but remember olive oil burns just as good as lamp oil.

CIGARETTES: Once Salem-Winston and Phillip Morris go down, there are going to be a lot of people with a major case of the with draws . A pack of smokes may just save your life, or gain you needed items in trade.

SPICES: Not too far back in our history, spices were worth their weight and more in gold. Egyptians were buried with their spices. Roman soldiers used to be paid in salt. Trust me, once your eaten nothing but bland food for a month, something along the lines of pepper, paprika, or even tarragon is going to blow your mind. Stock up on extra spices.

ANTIBIOTICS: Infection and disease are going to be the big killers after society collapses. As bacteria grow increasingly resistant and proper hygiene becomes harder to maintain, a handful of penicillin or Cipro is going to be a great advantage to have for your use or for trade.

SEEDS: Heirloom seeds, you will need the seeds to keep growing food year after year. And only heirloom seeds will give you the seeds you will need for next years growing. Seeds=food and food is life.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS: The most valuable items you have to trade are your abilities. Being able to fix small motors, start fires, navigate using the stars, or even knowing how to create and use simple machines will give you an edge. First-Aid and nursing will be much needed skills so learn a skill or two.

What's Up With The Lies!!!

I read every day the same bull from the news outlets about how things are getting better, like the unemployment rate is the same and not going up. WHAT? So let me get this right just because the unemployment rate is holding at a crazy point and not going up and the stock market is being played with so it looks good every thing is getting better. What a load of crap. I was at Andrea's Blog today Chicky-Bit Run at http://chicky-bit-run.blogspot.com/ and she was talking about the price of food going up. Me and my wife was just talking about how every week we see the price of food going up slow so people don't see it as easy as if it jumped all at once. But the thing they don't see is a lot of people keep up with the price of food and can see when the price jumps even just a few cents. Here is a small part of the blog I saw today.

From her blog:

According to the PPI Report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, March saw the largest one month jump in food prices in 26 years! In it's sixth consecutive monthly increase, food prices rose 2.4%. Some of the 'startling' increases they report include:

Fresh vegetables up 56.1%

Fresh fruits up 28.8%

Eggs up 33.6%

Pork up 19.1%Beef up 10.7%

Dairy products up 9.7%

So what does it all mean? It means that $100 bag of groceries that you're buying this year will cost you $124 this time next year. Wrap your mind around that. If you spend $100 a week on groceries, you'll be spending nearly $1250 more this year on groceries! Twelve hundred and fifty dollars. It's frightening, isn't it? And what makes it even more frightening is the fact we can't avoid it. We can't opt out of eating. So what do you do? GARDEN my friend! Take up your trowel and get some dirt under your fingernails. Spend $25 dollars on seeds and reap the benefits ten-fold! Spend a little more for canning supplies and eat all winter on that $25 investment by preserving your harvest!

Great info.... So get your butt in gear and stock up on food now and start a garden ASAP. The collapse is near and we all need to be ready. Use your time as best you can, so look over the ads in the paper and buy when items are on sale make your money work for you and make it go as far as you can, and remember to use the coupons and look for stores that double them and shop on the days you get the best deal. Like someone posted a comment to my blog said a free can of soup is just that a free can, but think if over the next six months you can get two free cans of something every week at the end of the six months you will have 48 free cans of some kind of food. Use your options and shop smart you don't have to buy just Mt. House #10 can foods you can add many different kinds of food to store. Get to work and save your life and the lives of your family.

After The Collapse.......

So the shit has hit the fan and you have made it, but now the real fight to survive starts. You have a few skills but not as many as you like to have or need. So what do you do when you get sick and have no meds or no doctor? What will you or anyone do for help after the collapse? I read as much as I can and study as many skills as I can, and so should you. I was a EMT-D and I still know the skills I learned and I still work at the hospital and every time a doctor is doing something to a person I have never seen before I try to see it and some things I watch over and over because one day I may have to try to save some ones life and I need to know every thing I can learn. I go to every class I can at work to learn as much info as I can. I keep a large group of books that I read off and on and as I find new books with great info I get them and I know a time will come when we don't have power to use the world wide web to get info from so I will have my books to fall back on. I would advise you all to start a survival library to have on hand. I also find nice stuff on line but know I can't go to it if the web is down or we have no power so if I find something I like I print it out and file it in my survival file. I went out and got a file box to use just for great info from the world wide web. I want to have the hard copy on paper so I will have it if we don't have power or a working computer. So get to it and build yourself a survival library and READ IT!!!!! Don't just buy the books and let them sit on the book shelve never touched except to be put away. Bulid, plan, prep and survive!!!

From time to time I will post some good info to save in your survival file, here is one.

Soothing Tea for Heartburn
1 cup water
1 teaspoon grated licorice root
1 teaspoon chopped fresh ginger
1 teaspoon dried chamomile flowers

A) In a small pan, bring the water to a boil. Add the licorice and genger. Simmer 12-15 minutes.
B) Strain into a teacup and drink.

Good Info We All Can Use

Here are some tips to make food storage affordable, especially in hard economic times:

1. Make home food storage a regular budget item.
2. Use your income tax return.
3. Use bonuses or money received as gifts.
4. Have a home storage Christmas.
5. Grow a garden and can or store the extra produce.
6. Use bulk purchases for regular monthly groceries and use the money saved for home storage.
7. Use interest from a savings or checking account.
8. Stock up when stores have items on sale.
9. Have a garage sale and use the proceeds towards food storage.
10. Cut recreational expenses and use that savings towards food storage.

Basic Principles of Food Storage

1. Store what your family will eat and learn to eat what will store well. Be sure to consider special diet needs.

2. Store foods from all six of the recommended food storage groups to ensure a balanced diet.

3. Check for expiration dates to determine the freshness and quality of the food items you purchase. Buy the freshest for the longest shelf life.

4. Make adjustments for food quantities based on the age and activity levels of individuals in your family.

5. Basic storage foods should be low in moisture (10 percent or less). These foods will retain their quality and nutritional value longer and will be more pest resistant when stored properly.

6. Incorporate stored food items into your regular meals to avoid waste. Replace them as they are used to ensure a constant fresh supply of food. Doing so will also help avoid the incorporation of costly or hard to find food items in your stored food plan.

7. Label each food container with the date of purchase so that the oldest items can be used first.

8. Food should be stored cool, dry, dark and airtight. Avoid storing in hot attics and garages. Keep food above concrete floors and away from heat and light sources. Containers should be as airtight as possible.

9. Inventory your food supply regularly. Check for items that need to be used, replaced, or added to your supply. Check for insect and rodent infestations and damaged containers.

Common Food Storage Mistakes

The average person needs to drink approximately a gallon of water each day. This is water for drinking purposes only. Many people also store a gallon of water to help fulfill their daily hygiene needs. It is important to remember that you will also need sufficient amounts of water to cook or prepare your food. Avoid this common food storage mistake by taking a few simple precautions.

Your predominant method of food storage will determine how much extra water you will need to store. If you are relying on canned food items as your main type of food storage, your additional water requirements will be much lower. If you are dependent upon dry bulk items, such as grains or beans, or dehydrated food items your need for additional water storage will be much greater.

The easiest way to supplement your water storage is by stocking different types of liquids to conserve your water supply for use in cooking. Canned sodas, bottled drinking water, bottled juices, and “other” types of canned or bottled beverages will help conserve drinking water for use in cooking. You can also store cans of soups and broths to supplement your dry food storage items. This will also give you a greater variety in your choice of liquids for cooking and something besides “plain” water for drinking. This will also help to retain some normalcy in your life during an emergency or crisis.

A little more difficult way is by simply storing an extra gallon of water per day for preparing meals. An extra gallon of water will allow you a sufficient amount to prepare several meals. This will require extra storage containers and space.

Properly storing adequate supplies of other beverages or additional water will help you avoid insufficient amounts of water for cooking during an emergency or crisis. It is also important to remember that during a crisis or emergency that sufficient water may not be available and that even if the water is on, many times it may not be suitable for drinking or cooking and will probably need to be filtered and purified before use. Keep a water filter and a means to purify your water on hand in your emergency supplies.

Preps and more Preps

I have been working on my preps this week. I made more 5 gallon buckets with rice, beans and oats. I have added more water and lamp oil to my preps. I think the little things in life will mean so much after the collapse, like the availability to have light when it's dark outside and a way to cook food with little or no trouble. I plan to survive the collapse and do it with as much comfort as I can, this is why me and my wife buy toilet paper every time we see it on sale. And the same with other items like soap, OTC medications, socks, paper plates, and other household items. Make a list of needed items and work on it. I plan to have all the needed items I can get and I want to live life after the collapse as best as I can and with as much comfort as possible.
